Captain America 3: Anthony Mackie on Ant-Man & Falcon’s Relationship

Such is the nature of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that heroes often don’t start off their relationships on the best of terms.
Black Widow met Tony Stark when she infiltrated Stark Industries in Iron Man 2, Thor got in a brutal fight with Steve Rogers in The Avengers, and Sam Wilson’s (Anthony Mackie) wariness of Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) at the new Avengers facility in Ant-Man led to one of the best fights in the movie.

By the end of Ant-Man, Falcon had begun a search for Ant-Man in the hopes of bringing him into the fold as a true Avenger, as the latest addition to the MCU will fight on Cap’s side in Captain America: Civil War. However, just because they will now be on the same team, it doesn’t mean they’ve forgotten how they became acquainted.







According to Mackie, who finished filming Captain America 3 in late August, the initially hostile relationship between Falcon and Ant-Man will take on an evolution in Civil War. Mackie spoke to Cinema Blend on the matter.


“Yeah, our relationship is… yeah. It grows in Civil War… But that’s Paul Rudd, man. Paul Rudd and I just make fun of each other all the time, so it just carries over into the movie. So I respect his royals – I’m pulling for his royals – but we just make fun of each other all the time.”


So while the heroes may have forgiven each other for the skirmish, they will not have forgotten. It seems that Civil War will seek to capitalize on the proven comedic chops of Paul Rudd and Anthony Mackie, both of whom have already shown themselves as two of the funniest members of the MCU. In a movie whose premise promises some dark elements, this dynamic could serve to balance out the more somber elements of the film. From what little has been revealed, even the typically snarky Tony Stark won’t be cracking wise as much as usual; fighting longtime friends can take a somewhat emotional toll.
